Partnering giants General Motors and ChargePoint announce plans to install 500 ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers

In a significant move to expand public charging access for electric vehicles (EVs), General Motors (GM) and ChargePoint have announced a partnership to deploy 500 ultra-fast chargers across the United States. The joint venture, named Ionna, plans to install at least 30,000 charging ports in North America by 2030.

The partnership with ChargePoint is part of GM's efforts to prepare for the launch of new EVs. According to Rick Wilmer, ChargePoint's CEO and president, this partnership represents a significant investment in fast and easy charging infrastructure.

Many of the locations will feature ChargePoint's Express Plus chargers, capable of adding hundreds of miles of range to an electric vehicle in 15 minutes or less. Some of these locations will be designated as flagship sites co-branded by EVgo and GM Energy, offering nearby amenities to enhance the charging experience.

The partnership will also include the use of ChargePoint's new "Omni Port" chargers. These chargers automatically dispense a Combined Charging System or North American Charging Standard connector, eliminating the need for adapters.

Wade Sheffer, GM Energy's Vice President, emphasised that providing better charging options helps remove barriers to EV adoption and improve the ownership experience.

GM is not alone in this initiative. Other companies like BMW, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis are also partners in the Ionna EV charging joint venture.

In addition, GM is working with charging operator EVgo to build 2,850 DC fast charging stalls in the U.S., including 400 in major metropolitan areas in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas.

EV customers from each automaker partner in the Ionna joint venture will have access to the jointly operated network. This partnership is another initiative by General Motors to expand public charging access for electric vehicles, aiming to make the transition to electric mobility smoother and more accessible.

The charging stations will open to the public before the end of 2025, but locations have not yet been announced. As the EV market continues to grow, partnerships like this one between General Motors and ChargePoint are essential in creating a robust and accessible charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners.
