Participants Affected by Suicide to Bear 'Beacon of Hope' in Upcoming Month
In Jersey, a poignant and powerful symbol of hope and solidarity is making its way through the island. The Baton of Hope, a central part of the UK's largest suicide prevention initiative, is on a tour of 20 locations across the UK, with Jersey being one of its significant stops.
On Sunday, 28 September, the Baton of Hope will begin its relay journey at Elizabeth Castle at 07:45. The baton will be passed along by people who have been affected by suicide, including bereaved family members and those who have attempted to take their own life.
Lauren De Gruchy, one of the baton bearers, is carrying the Baton of Hope in memory of her brother, who she lost to suicide. She believes that grief after suicide leaves unanswered questions, deep pain, and a ripple effect that touches every part of life. By carrying the Baton of Hope, Lauren aims to honor her brother, stand alongside others who've been affected, and be part of the change that will bring more hope, compassion, and support to those who need it most.
Gemma de Biasi, another baton bearer, is carrying the Baton of Hope in memory of her mother, who died by suicide five years ago. Gemma carries the baton to keep her mother's memory alive and to show that even through loss, there can be light, strength, and a message that no one is ever truly alone.
The Baton of Hope will travel west to St Ouen before completing its journey at Corbiere lighthouse. Along the way, it will visit key sites such as the Pomme D'Or hotel, States Chamber/Royal Square, The Cenotaph, Millenium Park, The Lido, Police HQ, and La Corbiere.
Dawn Burrows is another individual carrying the Baton of Hope in Jersey to raise awareness of suicide. All the baton bearers share a common goal: to break the stigma, open conversations, and ensure that no one feels they have to suffer in silence.
The organization responsible for the Baton of Hope in the suicide prevention project in Jersey is the Baton of Hope suicide prevention charity. The charity's mission is to provide support, resources, and a platform for dialogue around suicide prevention.
As the Baton of Hope makes its way across Jersey, it serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of suicide and the importance of supporting each other in times of grief and struggle. It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the belief that, together, we can make a difference.
