Parliament votes for increase in legal purchasing age for alcohol
In a recent decision, the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, has declined a proposal to increase the age limit for purchasing alcohol from 18 to 20 years. The amendments, which have been under consideration since April 2023, were met with a divided response.
The vote was not unanimous, with 38 MPs supporting the raise, 25 voting against, and 23 abstaining. Despite the majority in favour, the amendments have not yet progressed to the third reading, a crucial step towards becoming law.
Interestingly, the public records do not reveal which political parties or groups supported the proposed age increase, nor the exact distribution of votes among the Saeima members on this issue. This lack of transparency leaves the public without a clear understanding of the political landscape surrounding this decision.
The rejection of the proposal to raise the alcohol purchase age marks a significant turning point in Latvia's alcohol policy discussions. As the debate continues, it is hoped that more information will become available, shedding light on the reasons behind this decision and the future direction of alcohol regulation in Latvia.
