Parliament in Lithuania should assemble for an extraordinary meeting this week to discuss the appointment of the new Prime Minister, as suggested by Ingrida Sinkevicius.
Lithuania's Seimas to Hold Extraordinary Session to Decide on Prime Minister Candidate
Inga Ruginiene, a candidate for the position of Prime Minister of Lithuania, is set to face a vote in the Seimas following a series of political events.
The extraordinary session of the Seimas, scheduled for Thursday, August 21, has been called due to the resignation of former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas. Paluckas resigned as prime minister and the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party in early August.
Mindaugas Sinkevicius, the interim chair of the Social Democratic Party, announced the session and stated that its purpose is to decide on the candidacy of Inga Ruginiene for prime minister. The Social Democrats proposed Ruginiene as Paluckas' replacement.
If confirmed, the new prime minister will have 15 days to submit a new cabinet of ministers and a government program to the parliament for approval. The new government program will require approval by a vote in the Seimas.
President Gitanas Nauseda submitted Ruginiene's nomination as prime minister to the Seimas last week. The regular fall session of the Seimas will begin on September 10.
The Seimas of Lithuania is scheduled to hold an extraordinary session on Thursday, August 21, to discuss and potentially approve Ruginiene's candidacy for prime minister. The outcome of this session will shape the political landscape of Lithuania in the coming months.
