Tübingen Mayor Boris Palmer Reflects on Debate with AfD Leader

Tübingen's mayor, Boris Palmer, has shared his thoughts on a recent debate he had with Markus Frohnmaier, the political opponent of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Palmer admitted that he did not always manage to expose the content weaknesses of the AfD during the debate. However, he believes that he effectively highlighted the party's shortcomings when it came to discussing crime statistics.

Palmer stated that the number of crimes in the past year was 5.5 million, compared to 6.3 million in the year 2000. He also noted that the number of serious crimes such as murder and manslaughter followed this trend.

The debate, which took place in Tübingen on Friday evening, was marked by a heated atmosphere, delays due to disturbances, a lack of time at the end, and Palmer's own laryngitis, all of which he described as unfavorable "framework conditions".

According to Palmer, AfD politicians made fewer excited interruptions during the part of the debate that dealt with crime statistics. He also expressed regret for not clearly pointing out Frohnmaier's evasive maneuvers and his retreat from right-wing extremist contents in favor of a bourgeois facade.

Palmer had initially announced that he wanted to expose the content weaknesses of the AfD during the debate. He now believes that the debate provided many hints on how one could defeat the AfD on the content field. He expressed hope that these hints will be used more often in the future to defeat the AfD.

Palmer also admitted that he does not simply believe everything and that his statements contradict other statements made by him. However, he did not specify which debate he was referring to in the current statement.

Overall, Palmer believes that discussions with political opponents are the main way to success. He writes that it is important to engage in debates and to always be prepared to defend one's positions.
