Palestinians in Gaza find their livelihoods under threat once more due to recent Israeli actions.
The Gaza Strip, a coastal region on the Mediterranean Sea, has been embroiled in a prolonged conflict since 2023. This region, governed by the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas, aims to eliminate the Jewish state of Israel, as it prevents Palestinians from having their own state.
Hamas, an Islamic fundamentalist group, has been responsible for numerous attacks against Israel. The war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of over 200 more.
The conflict has left the Gaza Strip largely destroyed, with over 10,000 civilians killed by Israeli attacks. The ongoing war has also left many people in the Gaza Strip going hungry, as Israel has been restricting the entry of food and medicine into the region.
The Gaza Strip is heavily dependent on food supplies from abroad, and the Israeli restrictions have caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Large amounts of humanitarian goods, including food, medicine, and water, are held in warehouses in neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Egypt, but are blocked from entering Gaza. International NGOs, such as Anera, also provide life-saving aid, but face significant delivery restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities.
Many countries, including Britain and France, are threatening Israel with sanctions due to the attacks in the Gaza Strip. Germany, while not wanting to punish Israel, has expressed concern about the attacks, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (also known as Chancellor Merz) voicing his concerns.
Hamas, based in the Gaza Strip, has taken hostages during the war, with some still being held. Over 2 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip, making the humanitarian crisis all the more urgent.
Israel, along with Egypt, controls the borders of the Gaza Strip. Aid organizations continue to provide humanitarian aid to people in need, working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict. The international community must come together to find a peaceful solution to this crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected.
