Palestinian assailants fatally shoot six individuals in a violent attack in eastern Jerusalem, as confirmed by the country's foreign minister.
In a shocking turn of events, a deadly shooting took place at a crowded bus stop near the Ramot Junction in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem on Monday morning. The attack, which left six people dead and 15 injured, was carried out by two terrorists from villages near Ramallah.
According to reports, the attackers arrived in a vehicle and opened fire towards the bus stop. A security officer and a civilian at the scene responded with fire, neutralizing the attackers. Two gunmen involved in the attack were also killed.
The victims of the attack included four ultra-Orthodox Israeli men. Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) reported that seven of the wounded were in serious condition.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas, based in Gaza, praised the attack, stating it was carried out by two Palestinian militants. However, the group's training or support remains officially unconfirmed. Hamas also claimed the attack was a response to the crimes of the occupation and the genocide they allege Israel is waging against Palestinians.
The Palestinian Authority, a civilian ruling authority in areas of the West Bank, condemned the attack, rejecting any targeting of Palestinian and Israeli civilians. The Palestinian presidency in Ramallah echoed this sentiment.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich accused the Palestinian Authority of raising and educating children to murder Jews, suggesting the PA should disappear from the map and certain Palestinian villages should be reduced to the status of Rafah and Beit Hanoun.
Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir ordered a full closure of the area from which the terrorists came, as well as the Israeli army, in response to the attack.
The attack was one of the deadliest since the war in Gaza began after Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel. Condemnation for the attack came from various countries, including Spain's foreign ministry, French President Emmanuel Macron, the United Arab Emirates, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack strengthens Israel's determination to fight terrorism. Paramedic Fadi Dekaidek described the aftermath of the attack as severe, with the wounded lying on the road and sidewalk near a bus stop, some of them unconscious.
This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing tension and violence in the region and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
