Palace provides health update on Princess Bha of Thailand
Thai Princess Bajrakitiyabha, a key member of the king's inner circle and the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn from his first marriage, has been receiving medical treatment at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok for the past 2.5 years following a collapse in December 2022.
The princess, a lawyer by profession, has been unconscious and in a coma since her collapse while training her dogs in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. In August 2025, she suffered a severe bloodstream infection (sepsis) which required antibiotics and blood pressure support. Her lungs and kidneys have been functioning with medical device support.
The palace has issued several updates on the princess's health since her health deterioration in December 2022. The latest update, on August 31, 2025, reported an improvement in the princess's overall condition due to the resolution of her severe blood infection. The princess's condition has now stabilised, and her blood pressure has stabilised despite the withdrawal of blood pressure medication.
The palace has issued statements three times in the past few weeks, with the last one on August 31, 2025. Doctors are administering antibiotics to control the princess's infection, and medical equipment is being used to support her heart, lung, and kidney functions.
The news of the princess's health has garnered immense media interest, and people have been regularly praying and laying flowers at an altar set up at the hospital with the princess's portrait. Many Thais have been kneeling before the princess's image in temples across the country, expressing their prayers and well wishes for her recovery.
The princess served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014 and worked at the United Nations in New York. However, the exact details of her current condition have not been disclosed for a long time.
The king has not yet named an official heir, which suggests a potential succession issue. Princess Bajrakitiyabha's health and recovery remain a significant concern for the Thai people and the royal family.
