Wiltshire Council Announces Major Housing Investment

Wiltshire Council has announced a significant investment in housing, aiming to provide long-term solutions for families currently in temporary accommodation and support Ukrainian and Afghan refugees.

The council has allocated £10 million from its reserves to buy up to £40 million worth of homes, with the remaining funds expected to exceed £50 million. The investment will be made across various government programmes, but the exact amount for each is yet to be specified.

The funds will be used as equity to purchase homes, with the council's own company, Stone Circle Housing, leading the acquisitions. It is anticipated that up to 250 homes will be acquired to meet the long-term needs of residents.

The council has received a government grant of over £4 million to acquire 24 homes for Ukrainian and Afghan refugees. This funding is being leveraged up through borrowing, with 40% grant funding and 60% debt.

Richard Clewer, the council leader, reaffirmed Wiltshire Council's mission to have the right housing. He stated that the council is committed to investing significantly in addressing housing issues, as part of an innovative and serious approach.

The proposals ensure that secure housing plays a key part in providing long-term solutions to residents' needs, addressing issues stemming from the cost-of-living and social care.

This investment is a clear indication of Wiltshire Council's commitment to housing Ukrainian and Afghan families, fulfilling its mission to provide the right housing for its residents. However, the source of the total volume of more than £50 million for the purchase of 250 apartments in Wiltshire remains unclear.
