📍 Taiwan's Public Opinion on Foreign Affairs: The Final Say

It's clear as day that President William Lai's (賴清德) foreign affairs game is on point, according to the latest polls. Ya hear that, folks? Nearly 6 in 10 Taiwanese approve of his handling of international relations!

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs survey showed an impressive 61.2% of folks are down with Lai's strategy for tackling the tariff tussle with former US President Donald Trump. That ain't all though—a whopping 61.1% of people are diggin' the overall approach to foreign affairs, too.

But wait, there's more! He also went out of his way to maintain friendships with the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Tuvalu—the Pacific trio Taiwan's got formal diplomatic ties with. Guess what? 66.6% of you dig what Lai's doin' in the Pacific region!

Things got even better when Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung's (林佳龍) "democracy, peace, and prosperity" diplomatic strategy achieved a slight 0.3% dip in approval compared to last year, with 73% still standing by it!

The survey painted a positive picture of the ministry's plans to boost the economies of our diplomatic partners, with 65.5% showing faith in their work. And don't forget about Lin—55.9% stood firm in believing he's got the chops to lead the ministry.

The survey respondents had a unanimous verdict: Taiwanese passports make for convenient travel, with 87.9% agreeing! As for regional security, 80% of us believed that last year's freedom of navigation operations by Taiwan's international partners kept us safer.

There was also mutual support for the ministry's denouncement of China's aggressive moves, including military drills near Taiwan, interfering in local politics, and misusing UN Resolution 2758 to justify excluding Taiwan from international organizations.

The poll results showed that 84.9% of Taiwanese are on board with deepening economic ties with US states and territories. Furthermore, rates of approval are steady when it comes to viewing China as the most serious security threat in the Indo-Pacific region (69.2%) and recognizing China as a hostile player (67.1%).

There's also a growing interest in forming relationships outside China, as 53% of respondents gave more importance to foreign affairs over cross-strait relations, compared to 46.7% in November last year.

True Number Survey Research conducted the poll from May 2 to last Thursday—they surveyed adult Taiwanese aged 20 and above, yielding 1,686 valid samples with a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
