Smoking-Related Deaths in Saxony Lower Than National Average, According to DKFZ Tobacco Atlas

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) recently published its annual Tobacco Atlas, revealing some striking figures about smoking-related deaths across Germany.

In the federal state of Saxony, the proportion of smoking-related deaths among women was 6.9% in 2023. This is lower than the national average of 10.0% for women and places Saxony among the states with a lower rate of tobacco-related deaths. Bremen, with a rate of 13.2%, and Lower Saxony, with a rate of 12.1%, had higher rates. However, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern topped the list with a staggering 19.0%.

Among men in Saxony, the situation is slightly more concerning. In 2023, more than one in ten deaths were attributed to smoking, with 16.6% of all male deaths being smoking-related. This places Saxony in the middle range compared to other federal states, with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern again leading the pack at 19.0%.

Interestingly, Baden-Württemberg had a lower rate of smoking-related deaths among men, at 9.5%. This suggests that while Saxony's rate is higher than the national average of 17.5%, it is still lower than some of the more affluent states in Germany.

The Tobacco Atlas serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against smoking-related diseases. It highlights the need for continued efforts to educate the public about the dangers of tobacco use and to provide support for those looking to quit.

As we move forward, it is hoped that the rates of smoking-related deaths will continue to decrease, not just in Saxony, but across Germany as a whole. The fight against tobacco use is a long one, but with the right strategies and support, it is a battle that can be won.
