In 2024, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) made history by transporting over 511.3 million passengers, marking a record-breaking year for the company. This impressive figure represents a 3.6% increase from the previous year, with a total of 17.7 million more passengers traveling via ÖBB trains and buses.

The surge in passenger numbers was primarily due to a 9.8% increase in local transport, which saw the highest ever recorded growth by ÖBB. The number of train kilometers covered in 2024 also reached an all-time high, totaling 172.8 million train kilometers, a 4.2% increase from 2023.

CEO Andreas Matthä, who led ÖBB in 2024, acknowledged the challenges faced during the year, including the century flood. However, he emphasised that the successes outweighed the difficulties, with the company announcing a rise in earnings before taxes (EBT) of 113.6 million euros in 2024, a 2 million euro increase from the previous year.

The increase in EBT indicates a positive financial performance for ÖBB, and the record-breaking number of passengers transported in 2024 is a testament to the company's resilience and adaptability. The announcement was made by ÖBB on a Friday in 2024, celebrating a significant milestone in the company's history.

Despite the achievements, ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä acknowledged that 2024 was a year with challenges and successes. He expressed his gratitude to the dedicated team at ÖBB for their hard work and commitment to delivering excellent service to passengers. As ÖBB looks forward to the future, it continues to strive for excellence and innovation in the transportation sector.
