Osnabrück Crematorium Launches Grief Support Café for the Bereaved

A new Grief Support Café has opened at Osnabrück Crematorium to help those coping with loss. The first meeting takes place on Wednesday, March 4, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM in the farewell room. Similar bereavement cafes already exist in at least seven other German cities and regions.

The café will meet every other month on the first Wednesday, with upcoming sessions scheduled for May 6, July 1, September 2, and November 4, 2026. Attendees can enter through the door to the right of the large chapel at Heger Cemetery, where the crematorium is located.

No prior registration is needed, though organisers welcome advance sign-ups. Grief counsellor Angelika Molitor will be on hand to provide support and guidance. The team at Osnabrück Crematorium has designed the space to offer a dignified, welcoming environment for shared conversation and mutual understanding.

The concept of bereavement cafes is already established in places like Dören (Paderborn area), Ostfriedhof (Paderborn), Olsberg, and multiple Hamburg locations, including Altona, Bergedorf, Helenenstift, and Deich. These gatherings aim to create safe spaces for those navigating grief to connect with others in similar situations.

The café provides a regular opportunity for the bereaved to meet in a supportive setting. Future dates are already set, ensuring ongoing access to this community resource. Those interested can attend without formal commitment, whether they register in advance or simply drop in.
