Orizaba's streets bloom with sawdust art for San Miguel Arcángel feast

Orizaba's historic centre became a vibrant display of colour and tradition on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Artisans from Huamantla, Tlaxcala, transformed the streets into an open-air gallery with intricate sawdust mats, honouring San Miguel Arcángel. The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Orizaba's recognition as a Pueblo Mágico. A team of 80 artists, led by master artisan Efrén Chacón Godos, crafted nearly 700 metres of sawdust mats along Avenida Colón. The route passed through Parque Apolinar Castillo and ended at the Cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel. Each mat featured detailed designs of floral patterns, religious symbols, and the Pueblo Mágico logo, all made from over 400 kilograms of dyed sawdust, natural sand, and glitter.

The tradition draws crowds every year on the Sunday closest to the feast of San Miguel Arcángel. Locals and visitors paused to admire the temporary artwork, which has gained international attention. Exhibitions inspired by Orizaba's sawdust mats have appeared in multiple countries, showcasing this unique blend of faith and craftsmanship.

Beyond their beauty, the mats serve as a cultural bridge, reinforcing ties between Huamantla and Orizaba. The event highlights the shared heritage of Mexican artisan traditions, turning public spaces into a celebration of identity and devotion. The installation marked a decade since Orizaba received its Pueblo Mágico title. The sawdust mats, with their vivid colours and symbolic designs, once again brought the community together. This annual tradition continues to preserve and promote the region's rich artistic and religious legacy.
