In the world of collectible toys, a new sensation has emerged, captivating both children and adults alike. The Labubus figures, developed by Chinese artist Kasing Lung in 2015 for his children's book series "The Monsters," inspired by Nordic myths, have become a global phenomenon.

Initially, the Labubus plush figures were only available as part of Lung's book series. However, in 2019, the Chinese toy manufacturer Pop Mart took notice and began producing them as collectible items. This partnership with Pop Mart sparked a global hype, especially after K-Pop star Lisa of Blackpink popularized them in 2024.

In Germany, these collectible plush figures can be bought through Pop Mart's official channels and specialized stores offering designer toy collections. The distribution strategy emphasizes collectible value rather than mass-market availability, making the Labubus a rare and sought-after item.

Spielwaren Tausend, a renowned toy store in Wolfratshausen, has seen a significant demand for Labubus. Customers range from those who actively collect Lafufus, cheaper copies of the Labubus, to those who find the figures simply cute. The element of surprise that comes with the blind boxes, in which the figures are sold, also adds to their allure.

Interestingly, the demand for Labubus at Spielwaren Tausend is particularly high among women between 20 and 30 years old. Celebrity endorsements from Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and Rihanna have further fueled the popularity of these collectible plush figures.

Angela Frey from Spielwaren Tausend in Wolfratshausen states that anyone who has an original Labubu can consider themselves lucky, as finding them in German shops is a rare occurrence. The real Labubus figures are hard to come by, with copies called Lafufus available from various providers for 18-22 euros.

The Labubus figures, with their unique design and collaborative history, have undoubtedly made a significant impact in the world of collectible toys. Their popularity continues to grow, making them a must-have item for many collectors.
