Options for Khabib Nurmagomedov's Initial UFC Lightweight Title Defense Challenge
Khabib Nurmagomedov has once again proven his dominance in the UFC lightweight division, defeating Al Iaquinta at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to secure his undisputed championship.
Nurmagomedov, who had previously been hospitalized due to weight cutting issues, came back strong, busted up Iaquinta's nose, and secured several takedowns throughout the contest. His record now stands at an impressive 26-0.
Despite his latest victory, Nurmagomedov has his sights set on future opponents. He has expressed a desire to face Georges St-Pierre, believing that a fight with the former welterweight champion would enhance his legacy more than a rematch with Conor McGregor. However, St-Pierre has reportedly shown no interest in taking the fight at present.
McGregor, a former UFC lightweight champion, remains a potential opponent for Nurmagomedov. The two have a history of verbal sparring, with Nurmagomedov referring to McGregor as the "Burger King." McGregor is currently facing several charges stemming from a violent incident at the Barclays Center.
Nurmagomedov has also not forgotten about Tony Ferguson, who was originally scheduled to face him as the interim champion but had to withdraw due to an injury. Nurmagomedov believes that Ferguson needs to fight and prove his worth before facing him again. Ferguson's interim champion status has since been removed.
UFC president Dana White has expressed reluctance about booking a fifth fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson. However, Nurmagomedov still believes that he must face Ferguson at some point to finally remove all doubts about the rightful leader in the UFC lightweight division.
Nurmagomedov also faced Edson Barboza earlier this year, a fight he won to get back into a title fight. But the road to the top is not over yet for the undisputed champion. He would likely need to defeat Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje to cement his position as the dominant force in the lightweight division.
