Opposition to vaccine mandates by Florida's Surgeon General, Ladapo, runs counter to common practices in the medical field.

Dr. Joseph Ladapo, the Florida Surgeon General, has been making headlines worldwide with his unorthodox approach to COVID-19 vaccines and policies. A professor of medicine at the University of Florida, specializing in public health and preventive medicine, Dr. Ladapo's position is controversial due to his skepticism about COVID-19 vaccines and promotion of unproven treatments, which often challenges established public health guidelines on immunizations.

Appointed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021, Dr. Ladapo holds two degrees from Harvard University: a medical degree and a doctorate in health policy. Before his tenure in Florida, he was affiliated with New York University and UCLA.

Dr. Ladapo's stance on COVID-19 vaccines and policies has raised questions about various measures, including mask mandates, online education, social distancing, and vaccine requirements. His focus includes "medical freedom" and skepticism about established health policies, such as the FDA's warning against consuming unpasteurized milk and the addition of fluoride in drinking water.

However, his unconventional approach has faced criticism from many in the public health realm and some politicians. U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson has called for Dr. Ladapo's removal or resignation, stating that his policies are putting lives at risk. Dr. Rana Alissa, president of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, expressed concerns that his proposed changes to vaccination mandates could create unnecessary confusion and fear.

Despite the criticism, Dr. Ladapo enjoys the support of many conservatives who admire his willingness to challenge the medical establishment, including what some see as the influence of pharmaceutical companies. His policies have also received backing from Gov. DeSantis.

In 2024, Dr. Ladapo's Department of Health issued a guidance statement warning against using COVID-19 vaccines due to safety concerns. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) disputes these safety concerns regarding the vaccines.

As of now, there is no indication that Dr. Ladapo will be removed or will resign from his position as Florida's Surgeon General. His proposed changes to vaccination mandates would require action from the state Legislature. The ongoing debate surrounding his policies continues to shape the public health landscape in Florida.
