OpenAI Names New Global Head of Innovation Policy Amid AI Expansion
The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 have recognised advancements in education technology, with a focus on AI and creative learning tools. Meanwhile, OpenAI has made a key appointment in its leadership team, bringing in an experienced policy expert to drive global innovation strategy.
James Hairston has taken on the role of Global Head of Innovation Policy at OpenAI. His responsibilities will include shaping policies around emerging technologies such as AI-powered devices and robotics.
Hairston joins from within the company, having previously led OpenAI's international policy and partnerships division. In that position, he expanded teams across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Before OpenAI, he spent nearly ten years at Meta, most recently as Senior Director of Policy for Reality Labs. The move comes as OpenAI continues to strengthen its global presence. The company is currently recruiting for a Head of Asia-Pacific, Global Affairs to oversee policy and government relations in the region.
Hairston's appointment aligns with OpenAI's push into new technological frontiers. His background in policy and international partnerships is expected to support the company's expansion in AI and robotics. The hiring of a dedicated Asia-Pacific policy lead further signals OpenAI's focus on growing its influence in key markets.
