WSOP Online High Roller Event Cancelled Due to Low Turnout

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has announced the cancellation of the High Roller event, which was a part of Event #13 of the 2024 WSOP Online. The event, scheduled to start at 4pm PT on October 15, was open only to WSOP.com players in Michigan, New Jersey, and Nevada.

Despite the event's exclusivity, only four players registered for the $5,300 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller event. This number is considered extremely low, with the minimum requirement for the event to run being eight players. The cancellation of the event has rekindled discussions of "bracelet inflation" and late registration, as high rollers are accustomed to entering tournaments late.

The WSOP Online High Roller event was not actively managed on social media accounts during the scheduled start time, and some potential late entrants may not have registered before the cancellation. The four registrants received refunds for their entry fees.

The cancellation of the High Roller event may be indicative of a potential decline in post-pandemic poker interest or participation, especially among high rollers. This is a concerning development for the poker industry, as the expansion of official bracelet events both live and online, commonly referred to as "bracelet inflation," has caused some to devalue gold bracelets.

Interestingly, the WSOP Online High Roller event may have attracted more players if it were not US-based. The tournament was removed from the lobby, and the World Series of Poker's social media accounts either had delayed posts or were not actively managed during the event.

Poker player Daniel Negreanu announced the cancellation of the event due to low player turnout. This event marks a significant departure from the usual high turnout of WSOP events, and the poker community is closely watching to see if this trend continues in future events.
