Online bingo is often stereotyped as a game primarily enjoyed by a specific demographic. Historically, in the realm of online bingo, this assumption has been challenged.

In the 90s, bingo was a popular pastime at holiday and vacation destinations across the UK, with many seasonal licenses handed out to venues catering to this demand. The stereotypical image was that the audience was largely made up of older women, but these venues attracted a mix of people, with many returning week after week to play.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape of bingo has undergone a significant transformation. The biggest demographic playing bingo in the UK continues to be women aged between 25 and 54, but men are catching up, with the percentage of men playing online bingo having doubled in recent years.

The addition of online bingo has revolutionised the way people play the game. It has reached a new tech-savvy audience, exposing a new generation to the game on their smart devices. In fact, around half of the people playing bingo in the UK are now choosing to play online rather than in person.

This shift towards online play is not just a UK phenomenon. A huge number of people (approximately 1.5 billion) globally play bingo at some point in their lives. In countries where US culture tends to cross the sea and seep into their culture, such as Japan, the US variety (75-ball bingo) tends to be the most popular.

Bingo is also popular in Europe, with many countries enjoying the game. In Brazil, which legalised bingo in the 1990s, and much of Latin America, the game is now widely played and enjoyed. In the US, the 75-ball version of bingo is growing in popularity, especially among those playing online.

Interestingly, most bingo community groups can be found on Facebook, which may correlate with Facebook's user base. Three-quarters of those playing bingo in the UK are under the age of 44, indicating that the game has successfully appealed to a younger audience.

While the exact details of the change in the target group for online bingo are not available, it is clear that the game is becoming more accessible and appealing to a wider demographic. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how bingo adapts and continues to captivate players around the world.
