Onion Sausage Product Undergoes Recall by Manufacturer
In a recent development, Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has announced a recall of its Zwiebelmettwurst, following the discovery of E. coli bacteria in a batch of the product. The affected product is available in various German states, including Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, and Thuringia.
The recalled Zwiebelmettwurst comes in 500-gram packs, with a best before date of 27.08.2025. The batch number of the recalled product is 133, which can be found on the closure clip. Consumption of the recalled Zwiebelmettwurst is strongly discouraged due to the risk of severe illnesses in humans.
Customers are advised to return the recalled product to the store and receive their money back. However, it is not specified whether any other products produced by Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH are affected by the recall.
E. coli bacteria can cause severe illnesses, including severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure. Elderly people, children, and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly at risk from EHEC infections. On average, it takes three to four days from consuming contaminated food to the onset of the disease.
This is not the first time EHEC has caused concern in Germany. In 2011, there was a major EHEC outbreak in the country, with around 3,800 cases recorded and over 50 deaths. The cause was suspected to be contaminated sprouts from Egypt-imported fenugreek seeds.
Recently, there has been an increase in EHEC infections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with children being particularly affected. The course of the disease can be more severe in people with pre-existing conditions.
At the time of writing, no information about the potential consequences for Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH due to the recall has been provided. It is also not specified whether any other products produced by the company are affected by the recall.
Customers are urged to check their Zwiebelmettwurst carefully and follow the advice of health authorities regarding the recall.
