Ongoing Dispute Over Umbro's Logo Design Shows No Signs of Resolution

In an ongoing legal battle, sports brand Dream Pairs is embroiled in a design dispute with Umbro over allegations of logo infringement. The dispute revolves around the similarity between Dream Pairs' logo and Umbro's iconic elongated double diamond emblem.

The initial court ruling, made in 2023, favored Iconix, Umbro's owners, who had sued Dream Pairs for the perceived similarity. However, the decision was later reversed by the English Court of Appeal in 2024. Dream Pairs has since appealed the case to the Supreme Court, hoping to reinstate the High Court's initial decision.

The court systems are currently divided on the Dream Pairs logo dispute, suggesting that the brands may not be able to settle the dispute soon. The trademark claim particularly focuses on the use of Dream Pairs' logo on active footwear, particularly football boots.

Dream Pairs' logo features a layered diamond shape forming an abstract version of the initials 'D' and 'P'. Umbro's logo, known for its bold lines, has been a recognisable symbol in the sports world for decades. The court currently rules in favor of Iconix's claim, concluding there's a moderately high similarity between the designs.

This case serves as a reminder to thoroughly research competition when creating a new brand identity. It's not the only ongoing logo-related legal matter, with the Dallas logo dispute and the Tiger Woods' brand logo trademark dispute also making headlines.

As the Supreme Court considers Dream Pairs' appeal, the outcome remains uncertain. Regardless of the final decision, this dispute highlights the importance of originality and careful consideration when designing a brand's visual identity.
