In a recent development, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed that President Vladimir Putin questions the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, citing his rule under martial law and an expired term as per the Ukrainian constitution.

Two weeks ago, a high-level meeting was announced in Washington, with a deadline set for today. However, the meeting has yet to take place, with the Kremlin offering various excuses so far. The Kremlin's stance is based on Zelensky's rule under martial law and the expiration of his term.

Meanwhile, Putin has been ruling continuously since 2012, with constitutional amendments allowing him to bypass term limits. These amendments, as stated, favour Putin and enable him to extend his rule.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov also stated that Putin has not spoken directly with Zelensky. According to Lavrov, Putin is only willing to meet when there is an agenda, and such an agenda is currently not ready.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, on the other hand, sees no willingness for talks from Russian leader Putin. In his evening video address, Zelensky reminded that the only thing Russia is doing is investing in further war. He also emphasised the need for a swift end to the war, a sentiment echoed worldwide.

During his current visit to China, Putin has been making new excuses, a fact not lost on Zelensky who described it as Putin's favourite sport. Moscow, however, has shown no willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Ukraine, as stated by Washington.

The article does not provide information on whether Putin has addressed the issue of Zelensky's term having expired during his visit to China. Despite the ongoing standoff, the need for dialogue to resolve the crisis remains paramount.
