On the prowl for a satisfying pursuit

August's heat was intense. As the bowhunting season approached, just a month away, my brain was consumed with finding the perfect location for mule deer.

On the prowl for a satisfying pursuit

In the heart of New Mexico's untamed wilderness, a hunter embarks on a journey to find the perfect spot for the bowhunting season.

The author's expedition begins in a picturesque landscape, marked by the traces of various wildlife - droppings from a large buck, mountain lion, bear, elk, turkey, grouse, and gray jays. Each signpost serves as a reminder of the diverse and thriving ecosystem that awaits.

Prioritising accessibility, the author focuses on areas that are within two miles of a glassing point from the truck. However, the terrain presents its own challenges, with deadfall and charred timbers making access difficult.

Before setting foot in the wild, the author meticulously prepares. Ordering topographical maps, marking promising areas with stickers, and using digital tools like onX Hunt and Google Earth to assess tree cover, vantage points, secrecy, and access.

The author's scouting process is as much about stealth as it is about strategy. While traversing the land, the author strives to avoid scaring away wildlife, moving through the landscape like a hiker rather than a hunter.

Weeks are spent scouting for mule deer in various locations, from the alpine basins to the lowlands west of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The author's first area is a challenging drive, reaching the highest elevation the author's Toyota 4Runner had ever been in New Mexico.

The author values spots where birds and chipmunks seem surprised but curious upon encountering humans, indicating infrequent human activity. However, the presence of other hunters with dog packs, searching for bears, adds an element of competition to the journey.

As the hunt approaches, the author feels a sense of jitters, with less than a week before entering the wilderness. The author expresses uncertainty, wondering if they have done enough to ensure a successful hunt.

Last weekend, the author visits two high-priority areas: a peak with basins in the north portion of the Pecos and a 3-year-old burn scar to the northwest of Las Vegas. The landscape is characterised by torched trees and a sea of green and color from shrubs and wildflowers.

The author visits a spot within the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon burn scar, three years after the largest fire in New Mexico's history. The wild strawberries that cover the ground provide a sweet reminder of the untouched beauty that persists even in the face of adversity.

Preparing with physical maps and technology beforehand can save trouble during scouting. Yet, the author cannot help but feel a sense of apprehension, wondering if the perfect spot for the hunt lies just over the next hill.

Despite the uncertainties, the author is ready to face whatever the wilderness throws their way, armed with knowledge, patience, and a spirit of adventure.
