Man Sentenced for Attempted Fraud and Identity Document Misuse
In an unusual incident, a 51-year-old man was sentenced to six months imprisonment (without probation) at Essen District Court yesterday (7th August). The sentence was handed down in connection with an attempted fraud incident related to the stolen Pedelec case that occurred on Tuesday afternoon, August 6th.
The incident took place at a bike shop located on Altendorfer StraΓe in Essen-Westviertel. The man, who has no fixed address in Germany, entered the shop around 4:30 PM and showed interest in a "Cube" Pedelec on display.
The suspect presented a stolen ID card to the bike shop employee, who noticed that the customer did not match the photo on the ID. Suspicious of the situation, the employee alerted the police.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the ID presented by the 51-year-old was reported stolen. Additionally, the man carried bank cards and an insurance card that did not belong to him. The man's offense is related to identity document misuse.
The 51-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday and initially taken into custody on the order of the Essen Public Prosecutor's Office. It was found that the suspect had previously been known to police, including for offenses related to acquisitive crime.
The sentence was for the attempted fraud incident related to the stolen Pedelec case. The brand of the stolen Pedelec is "Cube". The 51-year-old has a history of such offenses, making this a significant conviction.
