Ohio educators perish in collision en route to drop off son at university; two offspring sustain critical injuries
On the first day of classes for the school district, August 19, a devastating incident occurred on Interstate 85 near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The incident claimed the lives of Maria and Donald Nunney, two beloved members of the community, and left their two children, aged 14 and 9, with severe injuries.
The Nunneys were on their way to drop off their oldest son, Justin, at UNC-Chapel Hill. Unfortunately, their van went off the highway, crashed into a wooded area, and caught fire. Maria Nunney, aged 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Donald Nunney, aged 55, was flown to an area hospital before passing away.
The family was driving from Cleveland to drop off Justin, who had dreams of attending UNC-Chapel Hill. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Justin was in a separate vehicle and pulled over on the interstate following the crash.
The loss of the Nunneys has affected everyone in their community deeply. The President of the Cleveland Teachers Union described them as incredible teachers, loving parents, and active community members. Their world has drastically changed following the incident.
Two children, aged 14 and 9, suffered severe injuries in the crash and are currently receiving treatment at Duke Hospital. Justin, their oldest son, is staying by the bedside of his injured siblings.
