Deputy Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Minister of Culture Julia Willie Hamburg (Greens), criticized the assault on her fellow party member Marie Kollenrott. "The cowardly attack on Marie Kollenrott is extremely shocking and disturbing," she stated on Sunday. During an election campaign event at Göttingen city center on Saturday, the state parliament member was attacked and hurt.
These and other assaults on dedicated politicians are not longer isolated cases. "This is extremely worrying," Hamburg remarked. The attacks aimed solely to intimidate individuals. They are direct attacks on democracy. We are all encouraged to unite and resolutely counter the opponents of democracy: "This goes too far!"
As per the police, a man had repeatedly struck Kollenrott in the upper body. She sustained minor injuries on her arms. Authorities quickly apprehended the suspected perpetrator close to the crime scene. They later discovered his identity to be that of a 66-year-old man and eventually released him. The department responsible for investigating political crimes is now examining the case.
