In a recent development, several officials in the province of Cebu have expressed their support for a proposed lifestyle check, following a plan by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The move comes amidst an ongoing campaign against anomalous flood control projects.

The idea for the lifestyle check was initially suggested in the Palace, with concerns raised about several officials owning luxury cars and expensive items not accounted for in their salaries. This proposal has found favour with Cebu Vice Governor Glenn Anthony Soco and the League of the Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Cebu Chapter President, Didoy Suan.

Soco, who has a history of filing a Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN), has openly expressed his support for the initiative. Suan, a public official linked to Cebu province, has stated that the lifting of the lifestyle check for Cebu provincial employees is pending procedural requirements. The aim, he says, is to restore dignity and privacy for the officers involved.

However, it is not yet clear whether the lifestyle check will be mandatory or voluntary for all government officials, or if it will only apply to current officials or extend to past officials as well. Suan has welcomed the idea of a lifestyle check for all politicians, from the highest level down to the barangay level, if it is necessary.

The proposed lifestyle check is being considered for implementation across the entire government, but no specific timeline for its implementation has been mentioned. The lack of clarity on the details of the lifestyle check has not deterred the growing support for the initiative among Cebu officials, with 10 more local chief executives expressing their backing for the move.

The motivation behind the lifestyle check remains unclear, with no specific reason provided in the article. However, it is evident that the move is part of a broader campaign against anomalous practices in government, particularly in the context of flood control projects.

As the details of the lifestyle check continue to unfold, one thing is certain: the government's commitment to transparency and accountability is gaining momentum, with Cebu officials leading the charge.
