Officers found negligent risk facing disciplinary actions, emphasizes the Commanding General of NCoS.

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, has issued a stern warning to the 30 newly promoted Assistant Controllers-General of Corrections (ACGs) during their decoration ceremony in Abuja.

In his address, Nwakuche emphasised the importance of the ACGs taking full control of their respective zones, states, and custodial centres. He reminded the newly promoted officers that their rank represents the zenith of career progression, and that they are not only managers but strategic leaders.

The new ACGs were expected to embody the ideals of the NCoS Act 2019, which promotes a shift from punitive imprisonment to correctional and rehabilitative approaches. Nwakuche expressed his disappointment over the "lackadaisical attitude" of some personnel, which he said led to recent security breaches in custodial centres. He warned that any further abdication of responsibilities will result in severe punishment.

ACG Sylvanus Yakubu, one of the newly promoted officers, pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedicated service to the nation. Yakubu described Nwakuche as a "game changer" whose leadership had brought joy to the officers. He thanked the families of the newly promoted officers, describing them as the "silent strength" behind the success of the officers.

Yakubu assured the C-G that the promotion would serve as motivation for greater service. He promised, "We will not disappoint you," referring to Nwakuche. Yakubu added that for the officers, elevation meant more work and responsibility to the country.

The service's mission is to provide excellent custodial and non-custodial services for the provision and promotion of public protection in accordance with global best practices. The NCoS has reported no instances of gender-based violence in custodial centres nationwide.

Nwakuche prayed for wisdom, courage, strength, and grace for the officers to succeed in their new roles. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). The C-G reaffirmed the service's vision to be a credible correctional service that secures, reforms, rehabilitates, and re-integrates offenders back into society.

With the new ACGs now in place, the Nigerian Correctional Service is poised to continue its mission, ensuring the safety and rehabilitation of offenders while upholding the principles of justice and fairness.
