Office return for CDC staff set for Sept. 15, following the five-week interval following a shooting incident at their headquarters
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta is preparing for a return to in-office work, with staff expected to return by September 15. However, the agency is still reeling from a shooting incident that occurred roughly five weeks prior, which claimed the life of a responding police officer and left the CDC grappling with a leadership upheaval.
On August 8, the gunman, identified as Patrick Joseph White, entered the CDC headquarters and fatally shot a responding police officer, 33-year-old David Rose, before taking his own life. The incident forced CDC staff to barricade themselves in their offices, causing a temporary halt to operations.
Following the shooting, CDC staff were instructed to work remotely. In the weeks that followed, they were given options to return to the office, with employees whose workspaces are impacted by the shooting being provided with alternative spaces on the CDC campus.
The CDC is currently led by Lynda Chapman, the new chief operating officer, as the agency's director, Susan Monarez, was fired by the White House. Monarez, before her dismissal, appeared to directly blame the role of misinformation in the shooting in an email to staff. In the email, she stated that the dangers of misinformation and its promulgation have led to deadly consequences.
The email from Monarez comes amidst a wave of resignations at the CDC, with four top officials citing politicization of the agency and a threat to public health as their reasons for leaving. The name of the leader of the "Response and Recovery Management" team contributing to the restoration of operations at the CDC Roybal Campus in Atlanta is not provided in the available search results.
Authorities recovered five guns and more than 500 shell casings from the scene of the shooting. White had blamed the Covid-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal, although no direct link between the vaccine and the shooting has been established.
CDC leadership and the "Response and Recovery Management" team are working to address staff concerns and ensure a safe environment as the agency transitions back to in-office work. The CDC is facing a challenging period, but the leadership is committed to restoring trust in public health through science, evidence, and clarity of purpose.
