CDU Proposes Changes to Rhineland-Palatinate Funeral Law

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Rhineland-Palatinate has submitted a bill amendment to the state parliament, proposing changes to the current funeral law. The proposed changes aim to make a few, targeted, and sensitive adjustments, with broad social consensus.

Gordon Schnieder, faction and party leader of the CDU, stated that the current funeral law has proven itself in its basic features over decades. However, he noted that it is long overdue for an update, as the regulations have not been revised for around 40 years.

One of the key proposals by the CDU is the possibility for parents to bury so-called star children with dignity. Star children are those who die before the 24th week of pregnancy or are born dead with less than 500 grams. Under the new law, these children would be able to be buried.

Another significant change proposed by the CDU is the permanence of honorary graves for relatives of the Bundeswehr who died during foreign deployments. The CDU argues that this should also apply to all others who died in service, such as police officers.

The CDU's proposed changes are not related to the coffin obligation, cloth burials, burials in larger rivers, synthetic diamonds, or obduction obligations for children. The new provisions are more extensive than any other federal state's to date.

Health Minister Clemens Hoch (SPD) announced the upcoming law on Deutschlandfunk and SWR. The new funeral law in Rhineland-Palatinate is set to take effect in October, pending state parliament approval on the 7th of this month.

The CDU believes that these changes are necessary to modernise the funeral regulations while maintaining respect for the deceased and their loved ones. The changes are designed to provide greater flexibility and dignity in burial practices, while also ensuring that those who died in service are appropriately honoured.

The CDU's proposed changes are not related to the fact that the funeral regulations have not been revised for around 40 years, nor to the fact that the announcements were made by Health Minister Clemens Hoch. The CDU's focus is on making sensible changes that reflect the needs and values of modern society.
