NYC transit schedules shift for Thanksgiving travel rush
New York City’s transit services will adjust schedules over the Thanksgiving holiday. Changes affect subways, buses, the LIRR, and Metro-North from Wednesday, November 26, through Sunday, November 30. Commuters and travellers should plan ahead for altered timetables.
On Wednesday, November 26, all services run as usual. The LIRR follows its standard weekday schedule, while Metro-North adds 10 extra afternoon trains from Grand Central for East-of-Hudson riders.
Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27, brings major adjustments. Subways and buses switch to a Sunday schedule, and the Staten Island Railway operates on a Saturday timetable. The LIRR runs a holiday/weekend schedule with 15 additional trains for Macy’s Parade attendees. Metro-North also introduces extra inbound and outbound service for the holiday.
Friday, November 28, sees a return to weekday routines for subways and the Staten Island Railway. Most buses, however, run on a reduced weekday schedule. Metro-North enhances its Saturday service to accommodate Black Friday shoppers.
The weekend of November 29–30 returns to normal weekend operations. All MTA services, including subways, buses, and regional rail, follow their regular Saturday and Sunday schedules.
The holiday adjustments aim to support increased travel for events like the Macy’s Parade and Black Friday shopping. Passengers are advised to check schedules in advance, as service levels vary by day. Full details are available on the MTA website.
