Nvidia's newly released A100 GPU is reportedly encountering issues with traffic congestion, raising concerns about a possible delay in its wide release.
Berlin's latest addition to its urban highway network, the A100 section 16, has been marred by traffic jams and closures since its opening just over a week ago.
The new route, which extends approximately 3.2 kilometers and cost over 720 million euros, was opened on Wednesday afternoon after barriers were removed around 4 pm. However, the first cars on the new section faced unexpected challenges, with the route having to be closed due to overloading just two days after its opening.
Experts had predicted bottlenecks due to the nearby Elsenbrücke over the Spree towards Friedrichshain being currently under renovation and only available as a single lane. The Green faction had warned months ago that the opening of the 16th section could lead to chaos without a coordinated traffic concept, but their application for a capacity analysis was rejected.
On Friday, the new route had to be fully closed due to a traffic jam. Traffic expert Andreas Knie from the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin has called for the permanent closure of the newly opened A100 section 16 until the renovation of the Elsenbrücke is completed.
The traffic jam on Friday was due to a backup on the 16th section heading towards the Treptow interchange due to heavy overload. To avoid a standstill in the tunnel, the affected section was temporarily closed.
The Federal Motorway Company has not yet commented on the demands and has not provided any information on possible closures or short-term countermeasures. The politician who proposed on Monday to close the 16th section of the A100 in Berlin indefinitely until the reconstruction of the Elsenbrücke is completed is SPD member Tino Schopf.
The discussion shows how divided Berlin is over its traffic future. CDU traffic expert Lars Bocian has rejected demands for the closure of the new section and referred to the tense traffic situation. On the other hand, Kristian Ronneburg from the Left faction has spoken out in favor of closing the route again if, after the summer holidays, it becomes apparent that traffic jams and closures will become a permanent fixture.
The renovation of the Elsenbrücke is not expected to be completed before at least 2028, assuming no unforeseen delays. The new section ends at Treptower Park, where a traffic light regulates traffic flow. Despite it still being school vacation week in Berlin, backups on the A100 have occurred due to the traffic light at the highway exit only releasing a limited number of vehicles.
Several traffic jams formed on the new route on Friday, with some drivers taking more than 20 minutes for the approximately 3-kilometer stretch. The 16th A100 section, at 720 million euros and only a few days old, is already overshadowed by traffic jams, closures, and political demands.
