"Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Perry, Steven Tyler, and Yungblud honor Ozzy Osbourne by performing a medley of his iconic hits as Prince of Darkness at the VMAs"
In a memorable moment at the MTV Video Music Awards, Aerosmith and the rising star Yungblud came together to pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne. This was Steven Tyler's first big show since the announcement of Aerosmith's retirement from touring last year, due to his ongoing health issues.
Joe Perry, a long-time Aerosmith member, played a reverse headstock Stratocaster during the performance, while Nuno Bettencourt, another iconic Aerosmith guitarist, opted for a different instrument. Contrary to speculation, Bettencourt did not perform with his signature reverse headstock Stratocaster during the VMAs tribute.
Yungblud, who has been making waves in the rock music scene, masterfully handled a portion of the tribute performance. He used a 12-string acoustic guitar, a departure from his usual electric setup. The request for Yungblud to perform the tribute came from MTV, who organised the All-Star tribute including Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Yungblud, and Nuno Bettencourt.
Bettencourt, who has a history of breaking the golden rule at high-profile concerts, including the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992, performed a guitar solo during the tribute performance. This was the first time Yungblud and Bettencourt performed together without Steven Tyler.
In a heartfelt gesture, Yungblud posted a picture with Ozzy Osbourne prior to the VMAs performance, expressing his intention to pay tribute to him. Yungblud, who already has a signature Epiphone SG Junior guitar, has also shown interest in creating a signature voodoo ES-330 guitar.
Meanwhile, Joe Perry has been hitting the road with members of Stone Temple Pilots and Black Crowes, and Yungblud's stock has been rising in recent months, with his tradition of jamming songs on stage with young fans. Yungblud is undoubtedly one of the voices of the new generation of rock musicians.
Ozzy Osbourne passed away in July, leaving a void in the rock music scene that this tribute aimed to fill. The VMAs tribute performance marked Yungblud's first big show since the announcement of Aerosmith's retirement from touring, making it a significant event for both artists and fans alike.
