US Open 2022: Day Three Recap
In a thrilling day of action at the US Open, several notable matches took place, with some players advancing to the third round and others fighting valiantly but falling short.
Emma Navarro, the 10th seeded American, kicked off the day with a victory over Caty McNally in the U.S. Open. Navarro's win sets her up for an intriguing match against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two, is gearing up for a night session showdown on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz will face Mattia Bellucci, who recently won the Cincinnati 1000-level title, in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
Iva Jovic and U.S. men's contender Ben Shelton are also set to compete in a night session match on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Jovic and Shelton's match will be closely watched, as both players have been impressive in their previous outings.
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova are currently engaged in a tight match, with the winner set to face Emma Raducanu in the third round. Raducanu, who won the US Open last year, advanced with ease, beating Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen 6-2 6-1 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Raducanu's victory came after a tough fight from Tjen, who made a surprise early push but was eventually let down by an apparent leg injury midway into the match. Raducanu, who had not won a U.S. Open match since lifting the trophy in 2021, seemed in solid form this year, making just eight unforced errors.
Novak Djokovic, the 24-times major winner, also advanced to the third round after recovering from a set down against American qualifier Zachary Svajda. Djokovic's next opponent will be British player Cameron Norrie, who will face Argentina's Francisco Comesana in the second round. Djokovic's victory came with a score of 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Victoria Azarenka, who has become the fifth woman in the Open Era to claim 100 or more singles main draw wins at the hardcourt majors, also advanced to the third round. Azarenka will face either Sloane Stephens or Magda Linette in the next round.
In other news, Aryna Sabalenka, the defending U.S. Open champion and world number one, is aiming for her first major title of the year. Sabalenka has had a strong year, finishing runner-up at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and exiting Wimbledon in the semi-finals. She will face either Alison Riske or Marie Bouzkova in the third round.
Finally, Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini is scheduled to play on Louis Armstrong Stadium in the night session. Paolini has been in impressive form this year and will be looking to continue her strong play in the US Open.
