Norway slaps Norsk Tipping with $427K fine over lax payout controls

Norway's gambling regulator has fined Norsk Tipping $427,000 for breaking payment rules. The penalty follows a $2.25 million payout to a player in March 2023 that bypassed required checks. The Lotteries and Foundations Authority (LFA) called the error 'huge' and 'wrongful' due to its potential risks. In March 2023, a player won $2.25 million on Norsk Tipping's KongKasino game. The operator released the funds immediately, ignoring rules that block instant payouts over $9,500. Anti-money laundering (AML) procedures were also skipped.

The LFA criticised Norsk Tipping's weak processes, saying they failed to prevent such mistakes. While the company recovered the money, the regulator insisted the fine was justified. Norsk Tipping argued that the incident was an isolated error, not a systemic failure. Internal reports from the company had previously flagged similar issues. Despite this, the LFA found the operator's controls insufficient to stop repeated violations.

The fine stands at $427,000, with the LFA rejecting Norsk Tipping's appeal. The case highlights gaps in the operator's payment safeguards. Future payouts must now comply with stricter oversight to avoid further penalties.
