Northward Migration of Dengue Mosquitoes Indicated by Research Findings
The National Health Research Institutes has conducted a study that sheds light on the potential spread of Egyptian mosquitoes, carriers of dengue fever and other diseases, due to climate change. Previously, these mosquitoes were known to only go as far north as Chiayi County, but last year, colonies were discovered in Yunlin County's Beigang Township, indicating they are moving northward.
The study, commissioned by the Climate Change Administration, combines current data on mosquito distribution with climate information from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Researchers estimate that Taichung and Hualien may become suitable habitats for Egyptian mosquitoes over the next 20 years due to environmental changes.
The findings of the research were published in a photo by Tsai Shu-yuan, Taipei Times. While the predictions using this model still carry uncertainties, the study predicts which areas might have suitable climates for Egyptian mosquitoes in the future.
In Yunlin County, prevention and control measures seem to be having an effect, as the latest survey in July showed a decline in mosquito populations. However, Taichung and Hualien Counties may need to strengthen their mosquito surveillance and control measures, given the potential threat.
Tracking the movements of Egyptian mosquitoes is crucial for disease control and prevention. Last year, it was discovered that both males and females, along with larvae, were reproducing in Yunlin County. This discovery underscores the importance of monitoring these insects to prevent the spread of diseases they carry.
Egyptian mosquitoes are responsible for spreading dengue fever and several other illnesses. As they move northward, it is essential to remain vigilant and implement effective prevention and control strategies to protect public health.
