States across the Northeast are facing some of the highest debt levels per taxpayer in the US. New figures reveal that Connecticut and New Jersey lead the region, with each resident carrying nearly triple the national average. A recent analysis by the Reason Foundation, a libertarian research group, highlights the heavy debt burden in Northeastern states. Connecticut tops the list at $26,187 per taxpayer, followed closely by New Jersey at $22,968. Both figures dwarf the national average of $8,000.

Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont also rank high, placing sixth, eleventh, and twelfth respectively. Meanwhile, Rhode Island sits just above the national average, while Maine and Pennsylvania occupy mid-table positions at 21 and 24. New Hampshire fares best in the region, ranking 30th overall. The financial pressure is already causing real-world consequences. In Pennsylvania, budget negotiations have stalled over a $3 billion gap between Democrats and Republicans. As a result, counties, schools, and healthcare services remain without funding. The Reason Foundation's managing director has urged states to cut spending, improve efficiency, and prioritise debt repayment to restore balance. High debt levels often force lawmakers into difficult choices, including tax hikes or service reductions. Without corrective action, residents may face further financial strain in the coming years.

The data underscores the long-term challenges facing Northeastern states, where debt per taxpayer far exceeds much of the country. With budget deadlocks already disrupting services in Pennsylvania, officials will need to address spending and debt to avoid deeper financial trouble.
