North Rhine-Westphalia's food banks face closure, leaving thousands at risk
Food banks across North Rhine-Westphalia are facing growing challenges as key locations struggle to keep their doors open. In Moers, the local food bank—a vital hub for 14 others in the Lower Rhine—now risks closure due to an expiring lease. Meanwhile, similar facilities in Düsseldorf and Bonn are also under threat, leaving thousands uncertain about future support.
The Moers food bank has operated for years as a central distribution point, supplying groceries to 14 smaller branches in the region. Its director, Raffaele Corda, has volunteered there for 14 years but warns he may resign if no new premises are secured. The city of Moers is currently helping search for alternative spaces, though time is running short.
In Düsseldorf, the food bank has already lost its building, while eviction looms for the Bonn branch. These closures come at a critical time, as up to 400,000 people in the state rely on food banks for essential supplies. Many depend on these services because the citizen's allowance—a monthly benefit of €563 for a single person—often falls short of covering basic needs. Social scientist Professor Fabian Kessl has highlighted deeper issues with the system. He argues that relying on voluntary donations, without a guaranteed right to food assistance, creates instability for those in need. The situation raises concerns about how vulnerable residents will access meals if more food banks shut down.
The loss of these facilities would disrupt food distribution for thousands in North Rhine-Westphalia. With no immediate solution in sight, the pressure grows on local authorities and volunteers to find alternatives. For now, the future of key food banks—and the people who depend on them—remains uncertain.
