Norfolk Casino Operator Donates $1 Million to NSU for Establishing a Gaming Management Education Program

Looks like it's time for some good vibes and gaming news! Boyd Gaming has pledged a whopping $1 million to Norfolk State University (NSU), all happening right here in Virginia.

This partnership comes hot on the heels of NSU revealing their plans for a brand-new gaming management course. In no time, the department will be rebranded as the "Boyd Gaming Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management."

Ron Bailey, vice president and general manager of the Norfolk casino, has shared his excitement for this collaboration, saying, "We can't wait to work hand-in-hand with our mates at NSU. Together, we'll build a top-notch team and create kick-ass job opportunities for Norfolk State graduates at our resort!"

Now, we can't reveal all the deets just yet, but here's a sneak peek of what this partnership entails:

  • Starting Fall 2025, NSU will be offering a three-credit online course focused on gaming management, that's right, Virginia's first one ever! The course, titled "Introduction to Gaming Management" (THM-290-90), will cover the ins and outs of the gaming industry, including its employment landscape, security, taxes, regulations, and the impact of gaming on host communities.
  • If the course takes off, NSU has plans to introduce a multi-course certificate program and a minor in gaming management within the School of Business, providing students with a more in-depth understanding of the gaming industry.
  • The aim of this partnership is all about giving college grads a heads up on the array of career opportunities available in the gaming industry, especially with the upcoming casino developments in the region.

This joint venture is also driven by the upcoming creation of a new casino facility by Boyd Gaming, in partnership with the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, which recently got the green light from the Norfolk City Council. The casino is gonna be right near Harbor Park, not too far from the NSU campus! So, buckle up folks, it's going to be an exciting ride!
