NordVPN Introduces Scam Call Protection, Aiming to Thwart Unwanted Phone Scams

NordVPN, the globally renowned Virtual Private Network (VPN) service known for its no-logs policy and rock-solid encryption, has announced the launch of a new feature called Scam Call Protection. This innovative feature is now integrated into the Android app of NordVPN, aiming to provide an additional layer of security for its privacy-conscious users.

Mykolas Dumčius, Chief Product Officer at NordVPN, made the announcement, highlighting that Scam Call Protection analyses incoming call metadata and displays warnings about potentially fraudulent phone numbers. When a potentially suspicious number attempts to contact you, a warning message will pop up directly on your screen alongside the caller information.

The feature currently operates by scanning call metadata without accessing actual conversation content, ensuring user privacy remains intact. To enable Scam Call Protection, Android users can head to the NordVPN app's Threat Protection settings. However, it's worth noting that the setup process requires granting specific system permissions.

In addition to warning users about potential scams, Scam Call Protection also offers user-friendly blocking options. Future expansions of this feature to other regions may include enhanced offline blocking of large phone number prefixes, as well as subscription models for advanced protection, similar to apps like WideProtect.

More elaborate organisation labels like financial or healthcare are also planned for Scam Call Protection, aiming to provide more targeted protection for users. NordVPN may expand the availability of this feature to other regions based on initial performance and user feedback from the limited rollout in the United States.

NordVPN offers standard VPN services alongside additional security tools, making it one of the biggest global VPN services, with servers in over 60 countries. The company is continually working to integrate more cybersecurity measures to combat evolving scam tactics globally. While Mykolas Dumčius did not provide details on when the features mentioned would be available, users can look forward to a more secure communication experience in the future.

In the coming months, users will also have a way to report suspicious numbers, further enhancing the effectiveness of Scam Call Protection. This feature is set to revolutionise communication security for NordVPN users, providing peace of mind in an increasingly digital world.
