Nordic Semiconductor Acquires Cloud Platform Firm for IoT Devices, Memfault
Nordic Semiconductor, a leading provider of ultra-low power wireless connectivity solutions, has made a strategic acquisition by purchasing Memfault, a cloud platform provider for large-scale deployments of connected products. This move is aimed at simplifying development and accelerating time-to-market for thousands of customers.
Memfault, known for its device observability and management services, as well as secure over-the-air (OTA) software updates, will integrate its capabilities across Nordic Semiconductor's entire product portfolio and into its existing nRF Cloud services platform. This combination is expected to strengthen the security, performance, power consumption, and functionality of products in the field throughout their lifecycle.
The acquisition further emphasizes Nordic Semiconductor's commitment to an exceptional customer experience, removing complexity and adding value for its customers. Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor, declared the acquisition as a "declaration of intent" to enable thousands of customers to continuously interact with millions of devices in the field.
Nordic Semiconductor remains committed to supporting all IoT device makers, including all existing Memfault customers, regardless of their hardware choice. The shared goal of both companies is to free customers and engineers to innovate while the platform guarantees reliability and insights for millions of products in the field.
Francois Baldassari, CEO of Memfault, stated that the combination of Nordic's world-class Systems-on-Chip with Memfault's cloud platform creates an unmatched full-stack solution for connected products. This deal further enhances Nordic Semiconductor's leadership position in addressing current and future market demands.
As IoT nodes become more intelligent through edge AI, and as security standards evolve under frameworks like the EU Cyber Resilience Act, Nordic's software and cloud services will equip product developers with comprehensive tools. The acquisition aims to set a new standard in the global semiconductor landscape by integrating hardware, software, tools, and services.
The combined Nordic Semiconductor and Memfault will provide a comprehensive platform for simplified development and accelerated time-to-market, as mentioned earlier. The shared goal is to make it faster, simpler, and more secure to develop, maintain, and improve connected products throughout their entire lifecycle.
This acquisition follows Memfault's acquisition by Arm in the same year, before Nordic Semiconductor's purchase. The combined solution aims to equip product developers with comprehensive tools as IoT nodes become more intelligent through edge AI and as security standards evolve under frameworks like the EU Cyber Resilience Act.
