Nordhorn continues to be a welcoming haven for cyclists

Nordhorn, a city in Lower Saxony, has once again been recognised as a "Bike-Friendly Municipality" after successfully retaining its title for another five-year period. The award was presented to City Building Director Milena Schauer by Lower Saxony's Minister of Transport, Olaf Lies, in a ceremony held in Hannover.

The city's cycling infrastructure, which includes a dense network of cycle paths, secure parking facilities, and clear signage, played a significant role in its re-certification. Nordhorn's commitment to promoting cycling, through measures such as traffic safety campaigns and equal consideration of cycling in traffic planning, also contributed to its success.

The award, given by the state of Lower Saxony in collaboration with the Association of Bike-Friendly Municipalities (AGFK), recognises municipalities that make a special effort to improve cycling conditions. The criteria for the award include good cycling infrastructure, measures to promote cycling, and consideration of cycling in traffic planning.

Nordhorn initially received the award in 2020 and has now been re-certified, demonstrating its continued dedication to cycling. In the process of re-certification, the city competed against several other cities, including Emden, Göttingen, and Hemmingen, but the search results do not provide the names of the other cities that also applied for the renewal of the "Bike-Friendly Municipality of Lower Saxony" status.

The renewed award is significant for tourism, as the well-developed cycling infrastructure attracts many visitors to the region. The new certification is valid from 2025 to 2029, providing Nordhorn with an incentive to further strengthen cycling and improve the quality of life in the city by reducing car traffic, noise, and exhaust fumes.

Nordhorn is proud of its continued status as a bike-friendly municipality, and the city has excelled with a high cycling share in total traffic. The city's recent achievements have also seen the cities of Cuxhaven and Lüneburg certified for the first time, marking a positive trend for cycling in Lower Saxony.
