Noelia's tragic death ends 601-day fight for euthanasia after assault left her paraplegic
Noelia, a young paraplegic woman, has died at the Sant Pere de Ribes nursing home after a long legal battle over her wish for euthanasia. Her case drew attention due to her traumatic past, including sexual assault and chronic suffering. Just hours before her death, her final request for medically assisted dying was denied. Noelia's struggles began long before her euthanasia request. At 13, she was placed under state guardianship after her parents separated. Years later, in October 2022, she survived a sexual assault that led to a suicide attempt, leaving her paraplegic. The trauma compounded her existing psychological and physical pain.
Her father fought for 601 days to block her euthanasia, backed by a religious association of lawyers who criticised 'serious flaws' in Spain's euthanasia law. Five tribunals, represented by Christian lawyers, rejected his appeals. Despite this, Noelia's last plea was turned down only hours before she died.
Noelia had expressed a wish to 'die beautiful,' requesting no family be present during the procedure. Yet, on her final night, she spent time with her mother and was surrounded by relatives before her passing. Noelia's death follows years of suffering and a prolonged legal dispute. Her case highlights the complexities of euthanasia laws, particularly for vulnerable individuals with histories of trauma. The tribunals' decisions and her final hours underscore the emotional and ethical weight of her story.
