On a sunny afternoon of August 27, 2025, a civilian patrol made an unexpected yet significant arrest on the A59 near Hassels. The suspects, a 22-year-old and a 30-year-old Romanian nationals, were apprehended for attempting to obtain money from unsuspecting bystanders through deceit.
The duo was standing by a dark car on the hard shoulder of the A59, dressed in suits and behaving uncooperatively and aggressively. Their behaviour suggested they were in distress, and one of them even asked a 61-year-old motorist for money, offering a "golden" ring in exchange. However, the elderly driver from Solingen only handed over a low three-digit amount of cash before driving away.
The arrest was ordered by the public prosecutor's office as part of an ongoing investigation led by the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office, in close cooperation with the police and customs offices. This operation follows a drug trafficking case involving a large cocaine shipment.
The white VW Golf, occupied by the suspects, was found on the hard shoulder of the A59. After the arrest, the vehicle was secured as evidence. The suspects were taken to a police station for questioning, and further inquiries can be made to the Düsseldorf Police Press Office.
The patrol noticed the suspicious activity from the opposite lane between the Benrath and Düsseldorf-Süd motorway junctions. The police have issued a warning, urging the public to remain cautious: "Being helpful is good, but being cautious is better in this case."
This incident serves as a reminder to always stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The police continue to investigate the fraud case, and more details may be released as the investigation progresses.
