Nizhny Novgorod boosts river tourism with electric boats and a floating bar by 2026

Nizhny Novgorod is expanding its river tourism with new electric boats, extended routes, and a floating bar planned for 2026. Demand for local cruises remains strong, with popular trips already connecting the city to nearby cultural sites. Authorities are now working to integrate these services into the wider Golden Ring tourism network.

Two new electric boats, the Moskva 2.0 and Fontanka 2.0, will launch in 2025. The Moskva 2.0 will travel along the Volga and Oka rivers, while the Fontanka 2.0 follows the Chkalov Staircase–Strelka route. Both vessels aim to boost eco-friendly travel options for tourists.

Currently, three main river routes serve the region. These include trips to Gorodets for its historic architecture, Makariev for its monastery, and, from 2025, more frequent journeys to Kostroma's Ipatiev Monastery. Day excursions to Gorodets and Kostroma have seen particularly high demand since 2023. The *Nizhny Novgorod–Bor* route remains the most popular among passengers. Alongside large cruise ships, smaller sightseeing boats also operate on the Volga and Oka. Plans are underway to extend these services further, increasing the number of destinations outside the city. By summer 2026, a floating beer bar could open on the *Neva-4* vessel. The ship is being refurbished ahead of the 2026 navigation season to offer a new leisure option for visitors. This addition aligns with broader efforts to diversify river-based attractions.

The expansion includes new electric boats, a floating bar, and more routes linking Nizhny Novgorod to cultural sites. These changes will integrate local cruises into the Golden Ring tourism programme. Officials expect the updates to meet growing demand while broadening the region's appeal.
