Nissan Redesigns the Leaf and Sets Out to Launch a Flood of New Electric Vehicles in North America
Nissan has announced a significant shift in its automotive strategy, focusing on electrification for the North American market. The Japanese automaker has revealed plans for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the popular Rogue SUV, marking its first PHEV offering in Canada and the U.S.
In a bid to bolster its electric vehicle (EV) production, Nissan is investing $661 million in a partnership with SK On for domestic battery production. This investment is expected to pave the way for the production of batteries for both Nissan and INFINITI EV models.
The new electric adventure SUV and the INFINITI EV are key components of Nissan's electrification strategy for North America. The INFINITI QX65 crossover, inspired by the iconic FX, is also part of this strategic push.
Nissan is not only focusing on EVs but also enhancing its hybrid offerings. The all-new third-generation Leaf includes premium features such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. This port allows Leaf drivers to access Tesla's Supercharger network without an adapter.
The third-generation e-POWER system, which uses a small gasoline engine to generate electricity, powers the electric motor that drives the wheels. Nissan claims this new system will offer up to 15% better fuel economy than current systems, along with reduced noise and emissions.
Looking ahead, Nissan plans to launch an all-new "adventure-focused" electric SUV in 2028 at its plant in Canton, Mississippi. Interestingly, this electric SUV will not be manufactured by Nissan but by General Motors at the same plant.
INFINITI is also ramping up its electrification strategy. Highlights include a refreshed QX60 SUV, a new QX80 package, and an all-new QX65 crossover. The INFINITI EV, based on the Vision QXe concept, is planned for production in the U.S. in 2027 or 2028.
The next-generation Rogue, scheduled for production in 2026, will introduce Nissan's advanced third-generation e-POWER system to North American drivers. The new Leaf, visually resembling the Ariya and having shifted from a hatchback to a crossover shape, is set to offer improved aerodynamics and a more spacious interior.
Nissan is reinventing the Nissan Leaf and introducing a lineup of new electric and hybrid vehicles for Canada and the U.S. With these announcements, it's clear that Nissan and INFINITI are committed to a greener, more sustainable future for North American drivers.
