Nine decades of ARAG emphasize increased focus on legal safeguards
In 1927, ARAG began as a small operation in Düsseldorf, Germany, focused on traffic legal protection. Fast forward nine decades, and ARAG has grown into the world's largest legal protection insurer and the largest family-owned company in the German insurance industry.
The company's journey is marked by expansion and resilience. In 1948, ARAG received its insurance license from the British occupation authority, paving the way for growth beyond traffic legal protection. By 1949, ARAG had expanded its services to other areas of life.
Heinrich Faßbender, the founder of ARAG, faced pressure from the Nazi regime due to his active political engagement. This led to a temporary halt in operations until 1945, when Faßbender refused to sell the company. The company remained dormant until post-war times.
ARAG's growth continued with the addition of composite and health insurance in 1962 and 1985, respectively. The company also established its first international unit in the Netherlands in 1962, marking the beginning of its international presence. Today, ARAG generates almost two-thirds of its legal protection premium income from international business.
ARAG's 90th anniversary is being celebrated with a comprehensive campaign. The campaign includes a nationwide poster action on over 40,000 surfaces and the ARAG Tower in Düsseldorf displaying a 1,700-square-meter anniversary motif. CEO Dr. Renko Dirksen claims that the ARAG Tower's poster is probably the world's largest legal protection poster.
The company's central anniversary website, "Moments of Trust," features videos of customers and business partners from twelve countries. SchadenBusiness 1875 - 2025 is also being celebrated by Zurich Gruppe Deutschland in its 150th year, and SchadenBusiness is also celebrating 100 years of DEKRA: Safety for a Changing World.
ARAG has over 6,000 employees, generates around three billion euros in premium income, and serves over 13 million customers. The company's Motor Vehicle Division has terminated all existing motor vehicle insurance policies, signifying a shift in focus towards its core legal protection services.
As ARAG looks towards the future, it continues to uphold the trust and commitment to its customers that it has maintained for the past 90 years. The company's founder, Carl August Bagel, would be proud to see the growth and success ARAG has achieved.
