Ania Majewska Honoured with 2022 Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship

Ania Majewska, a prominent neuroscientist and professor, has been recognised for her exceptional mentorship skills with the prestigious 2022 Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship. The award, given by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), honours individuals who have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to mentorship and fostering diversity in the scientific workforce.

Professor Majewska, currently head of the Majewska Lab at the University of WrocΕ‚aw, Poland, and previously at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has spent nearly two-decades dedicated to neuroscience and her students. John Foxe, Ph.D., a colleague, praised her commitment, stating that she has been instrumental in shaping the careers of countless young scientists.

The Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship includes a supplement of $100,000 for Professor Majewska to support her efforts in fostering the career advancement of additional trainees. This supplement is given in recognition of her exceptional commitment to mentorship and fostering diversity in the scientific workforce.

Stephen Korn, Ph.D., the director of the NINDS Office of Training and Workforce Development, stated that the Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship recognises the exceptional commitment of six awardees to the growth and development of their mentees. The award focuses on both the scientific and professional development of mentees, aiming to promote recruitment and inclusion of a diverse population of trainees and faculty.

In addition to her work as a mentor, Professor Majewska is also a leader in diversity initiatives. She is one of the founding members of the Neuroscience Diversity Commission and was named the Outstanding Graduate Program Director in 2020 by the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. In 2021, she received the Peter Shrager Award for her successful leadership of the Neuroscience Graduate Program, dedication to science, and compassion.

Professor Majewska's success comes from her ability to uplift those around her and hold others to the same standard. She is a true champion in the kind of mentorship that is needed at the bench to ensure equitability in science. The Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship is a well-deserved recognition of her remarkable contributions to the field of neuroscience and to the next generation of scientists.
