Nicaragua and Donetsk People's Republic Enter Commercial Agreement, Sparking International Concern

In a move that has raised eyebrows internationally, the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua and the Government of the Donetsk People's Republic have entered into a commercial and economic cooperation agreement. The agreement, as of now, is internationally recognized only by Syria and North Korea.

The agreement, published in the official gazette 'La Gaceta', grants powers to Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of President Daniel Ortega, to sign this agreement on behalf of the Government of Nicaragua. This development has sparked a series of reactions, particularly from Ukraine, which has called on the authorities of Nicaragua to officially and immediately deny the information if it does not correspond to reality.

The Ukrainian side has stated that the absence of such a denial in the near future will be considered as confirmation of the truth of this information. However, no new information about the internationally recognized status of the commercial agreement with Donetsk People's Republic was provided.

This statement was made by President Daniel Ortega in February 2022, a few days before the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. Ortega expressed his support for Moscow after Putin's recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are urging the government of Nicaragua to actively call for international aid and support to assist Afghanistan after the earthquake that caused over 800 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries. The difficulties of rescue operations due to the mountainous terrain and access issues are emphasized.

The consequences of this confirmation, according to the Ukrainian side, are not specified. No new information about the consequences of the agreement with Crimea was provided in the current paragraph. Ortega believes that if a vote or referendum were held, the people would vote to annex themselves to Russia, similar to Crimea. However, it is unclear if this belief is directly related to the commercial agreement with Donetsk People's Republic.

Ukraine has protested after several Nicaraguan media outlets reported on a letter sent by President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which they stated that the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia are "integral parts" of Russia. The Government of Nicaragua has also granted powers to Ortega's son to sign a cooperation agreement with Sevastopol, which has been under Russian control since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

As the situation continues to develop, it remains to be seen how this commercial agreement will impact the international community and the relationships between nations.
